Step One, Step Two

It is so important to seek God for direction in every area our lives. If we are willing to wait and listen, then He will tell us exactly what to do. Now because God loves for us to trust and have faith in Him, He won’t reveal everything to us all at once, but He will give us step by step instructions.

When it was time for me to pick my major for undergrad, I “knew” exactly what I wanted to do. I had been saying ever since elementary school that I was going to go to medical school and become a pediatrician. With this goal in mind, I was focused and determined to do well in school and took all of the math and science courses in high school. I got accepted into Virginia Commonwealth University. While browsing through the acceptance packet of all the different majors, my eyes laid on social work for a moment. For a split second I thought, social work would be cool, but I quickly pushed that thought aside and selected biology pre-med as my major. I didn’t realize it at the time, but Holy Spirit was directing me to social work that day. I just wanted to do what I wanted to do and had not even asked God what He wanted me to do with the life He had given to me in the first place.

During my first semester I did not do well in biology at all and even cried after my first exam because I got a D on it. My professor even told us that if we did not make at least a C on the exam, we should just seriously reconsider going to medical school. Now for those who don’t know me, I am a studiholic and I was used to getting A’s and B’s in high school with the occasion C in calculus (FYI – calculus is not my friend). So long story short, when God told me to major in social work the second time, I listened. God has been directing my path with education, especially with graduate school.

Last year, to be quite honest with you, I began to doubt if I heard God correctly about majoring in social work. Since I graduated, I have not had a chance to work in my field. Even with my internships, I’ve been told countless times that I don’t have enough experience. God even promised that I would get a job in social work, but after four years of nothing, Satan started to seriously attack my mind. It was at this time that I started to cry out to God and seek His face and this is the revelation that came to me. I said, “Alright God, You were the one who promised me that You would give me a job in social work, so it’s up to You to make it happen.” Now of course I have to do my part in looking for jobs and putting in my applications, but it was God’s responsibility to open a door. So it’s been a year later and still no open door.

Recently I have been praying for God to give me direction with where to apply. I have not done this at all. I’ve just been putting in applications everywhere. To be quite honest with you, it takes a lot of time to search for positions, making sure your resume and cover letter are on point before you submit your application. It has been an overwhelming process at times, but God has been teaching me persistence. This week God told me to speak to a director to learn about a specific area in human resources. Holy Spirit told me to do this a few years ago, but I was so deep in depression at the time and so focused on getting out of my current job that I didn’t listen. You see a pattern here? So as I did with my education, I’m going to do with my career as well. I told myself, well God has given me five years of HR experience for a reason even though I didn’t want it. I feel a peace about this direction because now I feel focused. I’m going to speak to the director next week and God is going to get the glory.

Here is my seed of life for you today . . . Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In ALL your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path (Proverbs 3:5-6). I am a witness. When you seek God for direction in any and every area of your life, He will give you the step by step instructions. We must be willing to stop and listen to what He tells us and not brush the gentle, small voice away.

Are you ready for your instructions?

STEP 1: Ask God what His will is for your life and submit your will to His. Confess and repent of any sins both known and unknown so that your prayers will not be hindered.

STEP 2: Seek direction from Him first and foremost. As God directs you, seek wise counsel. Key word . . . WISE.

STEP 3: Knock on the door of opportunity. You never know which door God will open for you so be open to new opportunities.

If you need prayer in this area, let me know. Be blessed.

God’s Protection

Psalm 91:5-6 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.

We can easily take the protection of God for granted sometimes, especially when we’ve gone months or even years without getting sick or injured.  Psalms 91 has been on my heart for over a year now.  This psalm is about being in the safety of God’s presence.  Every morning before my children and I leave for the day, I always pray that God will protect us from hurt, harm and danger.  I also pray that God will protect our car while we’re driving and our home while we’re away.

Let me tell you why it’s vital that you do the same for yourself and your loved ones. This happened to me a while back. One morning after I dropped my boys off at daycare, I was driving to my van pool and almost got into two car accidents.  One car after another tried to merge over into the lane I was in and almost hit my car.  While I was driving home that evening, a car in the lane next to me almost ran into the car in front of it and swerved over into my lane to avoid hitting the other car.  I braked and the other car slammed on brakes and I thank God that there was no accident.  To God be the glory, my children and I got home safely! We never know what we’ll face while we’re traveling, which is why I am so thankful for God’s protection. Below is one of my declarations for protection that you can include during your prayer time. Be blessed.

Protection Declaration

I decree and declare the Lord’s unmerited favor over my life.  I am protected by the anointing of my Lord Most High and covered by the precious blood of the Lamb.   I am protected wherever I go, while I’m awake and while I sleep. Nothing by any means shall harm me.

Foggy Worship

Foggy worship!? I know you’re wondering what in the world this post will be about, but just keep reading. This is going to be good.  Most days when I get up in the morning, I try to remember to check out the weather channel before I leave.  One day the forecast for that morning was FOGGY!  From the moment I left my house, through my hour commute and up until I arrived at my building, there was fog everywhere.  The visibility in some places was poorer than others, which could be dangerous.  So what does this have to do with worship? I’ll get to that.  First let me explain what fog is.

The word “fog” can be defined as a cloud-like mass or layer of minute water droplets or ice crystals near the surface of the earth, appreciably reducing visibility (Dictionary.com). There are other definitions for fog, but this definition is most appropriate for what God has revealed to me. So basically fog is a cloud on the earth.  A cloud represents God’s glory, the very presence of God. When the children of Israel were in the desert, during the day they were led by the presence of God, which was in the form of a cloud. (Exodus 13:21 – And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way)

So how do you get into the presence of God? Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise (Psalm 100:4). When we thank God and give Him praise, we forget about ourselves, our problems, our circumstances. We move from being self-centered to being Christ-centered. When we focus completely on God, we offer a sweet aroma that is pleasing to Him and God invites us into the Holy of Holies. Into worship. This is where God’s presence is.  God desires to be with us, but we cannot enter into His presence unless we worship Him. When we worship God, He gives us what we need. It could be a rhema word, healing, deliverance, miracle, breakthrough, strength, peace, encouragement. God will reveal His heart to us in worship.

During the hour commute, God revealed to me that this commute is like a journey. As I mentioned earlier, the visibility sometimes was just in my immediate area.  In this life we face storms. You may even be in one right now.  During these storms, it’s sometimes hard to see anything beyond your immediate area/circumstance.  It is essential that at these times that we worship God.  God will help you to see things from His perspective. During these times as we worship God, He will cover us with His fog/cloud/presence and guide us if we would just trust Him to direct our paths (Proverbs 3:6 – In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths). God wants everyday of our lives to be an act of worship, to be foggy. Is foggy worship in your forecast today?
